When Long Island homeowners start pricing out ductless mini-splits, Daikin and Mr. Cool both show up on short lists. They come from different places in the market, and understanding those differences will help you make a decision you are comfortable with five winters from now. Here is an honest side-by-side.
Brand Background
Daikin is a Japanese HVAC manufacturer with decades of global history and one of the largest HVAC market shares in the world. They manufacture many of the components in their own systems and have a deep engineering bench. Mr. Cool is an American brand that entered the consumer market more recently with a specific goal: make a high-efficiency mini-split that a skilled homeowner could actually install without a full HVAC crew. Different philosophies, different target customers.
Price Comparison
Mr. Cool DIY single-zone systems typically run $700–$1,400 for equipment. Daikin single-zone units generally start around $1,200 and run to $2,500 or more depending on the model and tonnage. Multi-zone Daikin systems can push significantly higher, especially the LV and Fit series. As with any HVAC equipment, the installed cost—equipment, labor, permits, electrical work—is what actually comes out of your pocket. Product Lineup
Daikin offers a broad lineup ranging from entry-level single-zone units to sophisticated multi-zone systems with variable refrigerant volume (VRV) technology used in commercial applications. Their residential mini-split lines include the 15 Series, 17 Series, and 20 Series, plus the Daikin Fit, which is a hybrid between a mini-split and a traditional system. If you have a complex, large home with many zones, Daikin's lineup gives a contractor more configuration options.
Mr. Cool's residential lineup is more focused. The DIY line is their signature product. They also offer the Mr. Cool Universal and the E-Star line for professional installation. They cover the most common residential use cases well, but they do not have the commercial-grade depth that Daikin carries.
Efficiency
Mr. Cool DIY units land in the 20–22 SEER range. Daikin's residential units run from about 17 SEER to 26 SEER depending on the model. Daikin's top-tier units edge ahead on peak efficiency specs, but their mid-range units are comparable to Mr. Cool. For most Long Island homes, a 20 SEER system will translate to meaningful utility savings over a standard central air system. The jump from 20 to 26 SEER is real but takes longer to pay back in energy savings.
Installation
This is where the brands diverge most clearly. Mr. Cool DIY units ship with pre-charged line sets using a No-Vac Quick Connect system. A homeowner with mechanical aptitude can make the refrigerant connection without a vacuum pump or refrigerant certification. That lowers the barrier and the labor cost significantly for a simple single-zone install.
Daikin requires professional installation. Their systems use standard line sets that need to be vacuumed down and charged by a certified technician. There is nothing wrong with this—it is how most quality mini-splits are designed. But it means you are paying for professional labor regardless of how handy you are. Daikin also has a robust dealer network, so finding a qualified installer is not difficult on Long Island.
One practical point: even a Mr. Cool DIY install benefits from a licensed contractor handling the electrical work and any local permits. Some Long Island municipalities require a permit for mini-split installation regardless of who does the refrigerant connection. We handle all of that.
Warranty
Mr. Cool DIY units carry a 7-year parts and compressor warranty when registered within 60 days of purchase. Daikin's standard residential warranty is 5 years on parts and 7 years on the compressor, with extension to 12 years available through registered dealers. Both are solid coverage. The key with either brand is making sure registration happens promptly—we handle that as part of every installation we do.
Support and Dealer Network
Daikin has a substantial dealer and service network across the New York metro area and Long Island specifically. If your system needs a service call five years from now, finding a Daikin technician is straightforward. Mr. Cool's dealer network has grown quickly but is not as deep. That said, their customer support is accessible and parts availability has improved considerably over the past few years.
Value Verdict
If you want a proven global brand with a deep service network and you are doing a multi-zone or whole-home installation, Daikin is worth the higher entry price. If you are adding a single zone to a space that does not have existing HVAC—a home office, a garage workshop, a sunroom addition—and you want excellent efficiency at a lower cost, Mr. Cool delivers real value.
Neither brand is a bad choice. The right one depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
