A Mr. Cool ductless mini-split is the better choice for Long Island homes without ducts, for additions, and for zoned room-by-room comfort — it installs quickly and runs efficiently. Central air is better if you already have ductwork and want whole-home cooling from a single system.
- Mr. Cool mini-split: ductless, zoned, energy-efficient
- Great for older Long Island homes and new additions
- Central air is best when ducts already exist
- Mini-splits provide both heating and cooling
As an authorized MRCOOL distributor and installer, we get this question constantly: should I install a ductless mini-split or stick with central air? Here's how to decide for a Long Island home.
When a ductless mini-split wins
- Older homes without ductwork. Many Long Island capes and ranches have no ducts — a mini-split delivers heating and cooling without tearing the house apart.
- Additions and converted spaces. Garages, sunrooms, attics and in-law suites are perfect for a single-zone mini-split.
- Zoned comfort. Heat or cool only the rooms you're using, room by room, which saves energy.
- Efficiency. MRCOOL's DC inverter heat pumps are extremely efficient and provide both heating and cooling in one system.
When central air makes sense
If your home already has good ductwork and you want a single, hidden system for the whole house, central air is still a solid choice. The ducts are already there, and a modern central system is efficient and unobtrusive.
